ItвЂ™s not working with the currently airing Ai Mai MiВ or Cuticle Detective Inaba, and it certainly didnвЂ™t work with Eiken. Simply being over-the-top and random does not make good comedy, and if anything, it only insults the viewersвЂ™ intelligence. ThereвЂ™s no buildup or calculated execution to the jokes, and it simply throws fanservice at you in the hopes that youвЂ™ll laugh and/or get turned on by it.

Yes, itвЂ™s trying to be over-the-top, and yes, thereвЂ™s nothing wrong with putting the heroines in silly situations to expose their body (so long as weвЂ™re talking about a fanservice series anyways.) If executed well, the tree frog scene could have been funny, but thereвЂ™s a larger problem that hinders its ability to be laughed at вЂ“ Senran KaguraВ does not do well with its comedic timing. WhatвЂ™s more disconcerting is when a tree frog jumps into AsukaвЂ™s breasts, and Katsuragi forces AsukaвЂ™s shirt off to free the frog вЂ“ in a public area no less! вЂ“ leaving a dazed, shirtless Asuka on the ground, and the only thing the other three find weird about this is that Asuka was afraid of the frog in the first place. I particularly donвЂ™t appreciate the use of the вЂњperverted lesbianвЂќВ archetypeВ when it comes to KatsuragiвЂ™s breast fondling, since it implies that itвЂ™s okay to violate someoneвЂ™s body so long as youвЂ™re both women. ( Fullmetal Panic? FumoffuВ and the -Monogatari series are good examples of вЂњtastefulвЂќ fanservice.) But when itвЂ™s rape-y or exploits a minority, thatвЂ™s when its starts to get problematic вЂ“ and Senran KaguraВ falls into that territory too often. With the right context and comedic timing, fanservice can certainly be used as a legitimate form of comedy. There are only three reasons you would ever watch Senran Kagura: The comedy, the campy ninja action, and the fanservice вЂ“ whether for its comedic purposes or its ability to sexually stimulate you.В I canвЂ™t factor in how arousing the show is into these reviews (whatever floats your boat, right?) and itвЂ™s still too soon to judge how good the action will be, but IВ canВ say that this show certainly fails as a comedy.
